About this deal

The amount of space between the blade and the bridge (which connects it to the handle) has a huge impact on the peeler’s performance. However, a few of our models, such as the Material Kitchen Forever Peeler, allow for blade replacements, so you don’t have to replace the entire body itself. Straight swivel peelers allow you to peel toward or away from yourself while removing the skin as you would with a paring knife, but it can be hard to get larger strokes. A sharp blade, comfortable grip, and smooth movements can make the difference between hacking away at your vegetables and having an effortless peeling experience.

Peel Potatoes Test: To examine the general use of each model and to find out how cleanly and quickly each one peeled a potato, we timed how long it took to peel two large Russet potatoes. Unfortunately, since it is a heavy peeler, it struggles a little bit on the fragile items, and is hard to hold comfortably when working with delicate parmesan cheese twills and perfect lemon rinds. It's surprisingly lightweight and unusually angled so depending on your preference you might love it or hate it. It moves through potatoes and lemon peels quickly and barely catches up on celeriac’s awkwardly bumpy surface.Part of the SharpPeel range at Lakeland, the stainless steel potato and vegetable peeler is described as having a ‘super sharp precision blade’ and the positive reviews demonstrate that it lives up to its promise. I was surprised that I liked the OXO Good Grips Y Peeler better than the more expensive OXO “Pro” version, but it comes down to a few features that make all the difference. It was able to catch onto the thick, tough skin immediately and peel it away smoothly and without much resistance. A great peeler should easily remove skin from vegetables and fruits, whether it’s thick, rough skin or delicate, soft rinds.

It is designed to work on apples but will also peel a number of other fruits and vegetables such as pears, beetroot, potatoes, cucumbers and thick carrots. Hand-held fixed blades quickly remove skin and peel from fruit and veg, and particularly slick peelers can also be used to create ribbons. With potatoes, it sometimes skidded during peeling, and due to the straight swivel action, peeled skin would often get trapped in the blade. It's also available in a wide variety of colors if you want to add a bit of personality to your toolkit. The only potential downside to the design is the wide blade, which we found tricky to maneuver over smaller fruit and vegetables.
