About this deal

The parents of the brothers are villainously awful, but everyone else was either mostly good or pretty bad although not completely irredeemable. Everything stays under control until Ed’s wife, Cara, gets concussion and can’t keep her thoughts to herself. Overall rating: I start at 5 stars (I read it, finished, enjoyed it (+1 star) and even was a bit obsessed by it in the process and afterwards which is a rare thing for me (+1 star)).

Grown Ups is as alive, complicated and chaotic as any real-life family, evoking extraordinary tenderness, pain and humour. This is an emotional tour de force, with a plot that packs great power but is lifted, as always, by genuine human warmth. Her first novel Watermelon was published in Ireland in 1995, where it was an immediate, runaway success.

There were too many characters to really care about any of them and I found it hard to keep them all straight. Johnny Casey, his two brothers Ed and Liam, their beautiful, talented wives and all their kids spend a lot of time together--birthday parties, anniversary celebrations, weekends away. It started off well and I loved the opening chapters at the dinner party, but after that I struggled to engage with the characters and the story. I'm glad Jessie and Johnny took TJ's forays into becoming transgender in their stride, but they are also Irish parents only ten years younger than mine.As everything unravels, each of the adults finds themselves wondering if it's--finally--the time to grow up. Jessie wants them to be one big happy family and goes to great lengths and expense to arrange family holidays which cause all their insecurities to blow out of proportion.
