About this deal

There are two types of nutritional yeast: fortified and unfortified. Unfortified nutritional yeast does not contain any added vitamins or minerals. It only contains the nutrients that are naturally produced by the yeast. A one tablespoon serving of nutritional yeast is 20 calories, with 0g of fat, 1g of carbs, 1g of fiber, and 2g of protein. It provides over 100% of the daily value for the vitamins thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), and pyridoxine (B6). Roughly half the daily value for niacin (B3), pantothenic acid (B5), folic acid (B9), and cobalamin (B12). The minerals zinc, selenium, and iron are 10% or less of RDA.

After the yeast is washed and dried, the end result is tiny yellow flakes that have a nutty, cheesy flavor! Nutritional Yeast Nutrition Facts Bragg’s nutritional yeast contains a soluble fiber known as beta-glucan. Found in the cell walls of yeast, beta glucan has been shown in over 6,000 studies to “exhibit immunostimulating properties” (5). No detectable lead levels. Dr. Greger’s research showed that Bragg contained no detectable lead, so you don’t have to worry about any negative health effects. In the process, nutritional yeast has earned itself a trendy new name among foodies and culinary bloggers –‘nooch’. What does nutritional yeast taste like? This is not an easy question to answer for us but very good news for you, as every single brand of nutritional yeast on the market is absolutely delicious. They concluded that “of all forms of dietary fiber, natural β-glucan molecules are the most promising to use as a method of treating patients with dyslipidemia,” or elevated levels of cholesterol in the blood (7).

The 1g of fiber per tablespoon seems trivial, but if you’re eating 4 or 5 of them, that equates to being 20-25% of the recommended daily value. Once your pizza base is cooked, sprinkle a layer of nutritional yeast in place of the cheese before adding fresh tomato sauce, basil and cheese. Haaz prefers unfortified nutritional yeast (because it’s less processed) and recommends looking for nutritional yeast flakes over powdered varieties. “I find that the flaky variety works better for how we use it at the Ranch,” she says, likening the textural difference to standard table salt versus the all-mighty Diamond Crystal. It gets even better. Nutritional yeast is also gluten-free, affordable, versatile, and a great source of B vitamins for vegans and vegetarians. Theoretically speaking, adding just a tablespoon of fortified nutritional yeast to your dinner every day can supply you with over 100% of the recommended intake for vitamin B12. On top of that, fortified varieties of nooch are also considered great sources of folic acid, antioxidants, and trace minerals like zinc, manganese, and selenium. It's a complete protein that can be added to pasta dishes, soups, stews, chilis, curries, homemade vegan cheese sauces, popcorn, salads, and much more. Since free glutamic acid is cheap and since its neurotoxic nerve stimulation enhances so wonderfully the flavor of basically bland and tasteless foods, such as many low-fat and vegetarian foods, manufacturers are eager to go on using it and do not want the public to realize any of the problems.” –The American Nutrition Association ( source)

With four grams per serving, nutritional yeast doesn’t skimp on the fiber, either. In addition to helping you feel full, fiber also promotes digestive health, says Hurley. 3. It’s MSG-free. Since nutritional yeast is a low-glycemic food, it can help you regulate blood sugar levels. That means fewer cravings, better energy levels and sleep, and a lower risk of metabolic disease. Does nutritional yeast have any downsides? This ingredient fits nearly any diet or eating style. It’s naturally low in sodium and calories, and it’s fat-free, sugar-free, gluten-free, and vegan. B12 absorption can be spotty from food sources, so it’s best to get extra and get it consistently with a supplement. The nutritional yeast B12 content can range, especially depending on whether it’s fortified or unfortified. However, studies show that supplementing with fortified nutritional yeast can be an effective way to restore vitamin B12 levels in those who are deficient. How to UseWe could not find any noticeable differences in taste and texture for any of the major nooch brands, as they all contain 100% nutritional yeast, and nothing else! What nutritional yeast is the most affordable? people with seasonal allergies, who were otherwise healthy, were given a supplement or a placebo to take for 12 weeks during peak pollen season. Is all nutritional yeast the same? When browsing the aisles of your local store, you may notice that there are two distinct types, each of which has notable differences in terms of nutritional value. Add the nutritional yeast at the very end of the recipe, when the soup has been taken off the heat and is about to be blended. At 730% of your daily value of B12 per quarter cup, Bob’s Red Mill is no slouch in the nutrition department, either. But the reason we love this nooch has more to do with the reputation of a company that produces a long list of quality grain and baking mix products. Plus, this large flake nooch tastes pretty great. 3. Anthony’s Premium Nutritional Yeast Flakes

However, with all new foods, it’s always best to consume a small amount first and slowly work your way up to assess your tolerance and prevent adverse side effects. Nutritional yeast contains beta-glucan, a type of fiber that has been shown to help reduce cholesterol levels,” says McGrane. The B vitamins are its biggest nutritional benefit, while the cheese-like flavor are its most prized quality for cooking and recipes. Some people prefer non-fortified nutritional yeast for a few reasons, though. For one, it’s more natural. “Fortified with extra nutrients” is not really the way nature intended or built any food to be. Just 1 tablespoon (11 grams) of nutritional yeast flakes may provide over 38 mg of niacin. That’s more than double the daily value for both men and women ( 1, 11).While it cannot replace whole food, nutritional yeast can help provide much needed vitamins, especially to vegans and vegetarians, who often have concerns about getting enough B vitamins in their diets. Each serving contains a low amount of nutritional yeast calories but a high amount of protein, vitamins and minerals. Since we typically get B12 from animal products like eggs, meat, fish, and dairy, vegans and vegetarians often fall short, says Palinksi-Wade.
