Now I've tried a few other Japanese whiskies before, specifically the Yamazaki 12 yr (over rated in my opinion) and the Hakushu 12 yr old (absolutely brilliant). The box has been revamped with a more upscale appearance and while the previous version was undoubtedly gorgeous in its own right,this new one feels even more deserving of housing a the famous bottle and liquid inside. The label has also been updated with a new tagline. Where it used to say “A harmonious blend of handcrafted select specially aged whiskies”, it now states “A harmonious blend of the finest selection of specially aged whiskies.” The vast number of whiskies used for each bottle – sometimes more than 30 per blend – reveals a fast-paced adventure for all the senses. It’s something no other whisky brand has achieved, perfected only with years of experience. With its unusual flavors like lychee and fig and full orchestra and aromas blended with a traditional smokiness, Hibiki is everything its name, “harmonious” represents, and more. Finish is reasonably long, more fruit, some bolied sweets and bonfire toffee and has the barest, barest whispering of smoke.

Balance: Not as "harmonious" (as the translation of Hibiki implies), I find that although certain elements in this whisky work well, they do not combine in such a way as to elevate the overall experience, such as a very good whisky can do.

I wish I'd brought 3 or 4 bottles (I could sell 1 bottle and pay for the other 3 and still make a profit).

Taste: Well it's smooth, no burn, which when I first tasted it, blew away every conception and prejudice I had against whisky. There's plum, citrous peel, spice, oak wood, dry aged wood, little subtle vanilla, some very light peat or charcoal, caramel, brown sugar, tobacco leaf, leather, slight floral heather note.
